| Diesel and gasoil are settling at record highs even as U.S. West Texas Intermediate drops below $100 a barrel. Both facts are true at the same moment, and that gap between crude and refined fuel is the whole story. Capital Currents Crude oil futures fell sharply on Thursday as Saudi Arabia rerouted its East-West pipeline through Oman, temporarily offsetting supply concerns after a drone strike from Iraqi territory near the Iranian border. Brent crude futures fell 3.32% to $102.32 a barrel, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures dropped 2.72% to $99.64 a barrel. The East-West pipeline was shut down as a precautionary measure following the drone attack, though Saudi Arabia has not provided a timeline for its reopening. To compensate for the disruption, Saudi Arabia offered additional crude to Asian refiners through ship-to-ship transfers near Oman's Sohar port. The drop in oil prices comes after a sharp reversal from four-month highs reached earlier this week, reflecting a shift in market sentiment as the immediate threat to Saudi exports appears to have passed. The Record Nobody Led With Fuel markets remain under pressure due to ongoing pipeline disruptions, constrained refining capacity, and tight diesel markets. Diesel and gasoil markets are still at record levels, while gasoline pump prices have topped $4.4 a gallon, indicating that the real squeeze has shifted from crude to refined products. Despite the drop in crude prices, the continued tightness in refined products suggests that fuel costs will remain elevated in the near term. Digital Pulse ![Digital Pulse](https://arxvombcfexjpkgyh2.b-cdn.net/65152cbe-a743-40df-8669-649645a60d91.png) The electric vehicle (EV) market is growing rapidly, with more than 137,000 EVs and plug-in hybrids registered in Oregon as of February. The state ranks No. 22 nationally for EV charging access, with 55 public chargers per 1,000 miles of road. Oregon estimates it needs more than 17,000 public ports by 2030 to keep up with rapid adoption and demand. The state's EV rebate program, offering up to $7,500 for a new electric vehicle, has burned through its funding, highlighting the need for expanded charging infrastructure. As the EV market continues to grow, the demand for reliable charging infrastructure is expected to increase, further emphasizing the importance of addressing fuel-cost concerns. Market Moves The rise in fuel prices is driven by supply-line breakdowns, limited processing capacity, and a stretched diesel supply. The shutdown of the pipeline, a key artery for moving Saudi crude, has contributed to the tightness in refined products. Global ![Global](https://arxvombcfexjpkgyh2.b-cdn.net/d24cc748-b4c3-436d-becc-d8c19aa1af40.png) The Iran war has cost more than $33 billion, including damage to U.S. diplomatic facilities in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, according to the Pentagon Inspector General. The damage includes hundreds of buildings and dozens of U.S. aircraft at bases in the region. House Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that the goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is "taken care of," while Republicans plan to focus on reducing gas prices. Why Diesel Costs Hit Your Wallet Before Crude Does Even with crude oil prices falling, the real squeeze is on the fuel that powers the economy, with diesel and gasoil markets remaining tight. Supply-line breakdowns and limited refining capacity are driving up fuel costs, which affect everything from groceries to shipping. The closure of the East-West pipeline has added to the uncertainty in the market, with no clear timeline for its reopening. The barrel is the headline, the refinery is the story, and the reader who watches diesel settlements and the pipeline restart will understand their own costs before the crude quote ever tells them. |
